Recurrent Balanoposthitis and its treatment

What are the causes of Balanoposthitis?

Balanoposthitis is often the sequelae of poor hygiene which can be due to tight foreskin. Uncontrolled Diabetes is the most common cause associated with this disease which can lead to fungal infection. Besides this, phimosis(Tight foreskin/Phimosis – causes, symptoms and treatment), BXO, sexually transmitted infection, local application of soaps and lotions etc also can lead on to cause Balanoposthitis.

What are the symptoms of Balanoposthitis?

Balanoposthitis features include painful swelling of the foreskin with often failed retraction of the foreskin. Cracking of foreskin can develop upon forced retraction. There is associated redness of the glans head with sores and foul smelling discharge can be present. Local itching can be present. Often, urinary symptoms such as burning micturition, increased frequency are present.

How is Balanoposthitis diagnosed?

It is diagnosed by physical examination conducted by your doctor. Tests are sometimes required to check the underlying cause of its development, like blood sugar or tests for STI.

What is the treatment for Balanoposthitis?

Treatment include painkillers, anti-inflammatory drugs, antibiotics and local antibiotic and antifungal creams or ointments. Local hygiene is advocated in all such cases. The underlying cause has to be simultaneously addressed in these patients, as it will lead to incomplete resolution otherwise.

Patient with phimosis and BXO leading onto develop infection often need circumcision as these conditions will cause recurrent balanoposthitis otherwise. Read Can phimosis be treated non operatively ??

In diabetic patient, blood sugar need to be strictly controlled to prevent the risk of its recurrence.
