What is PSA ?

PSA (Prostate specific antigen) is a protein hormone secreted exclusively by prostate gland in our body. It is secreted mainly into semen and small amount get into blood and detected by PSA test.

Why PSA test is done ?

PSA test determine level of PSA in bloodstream. It is done mainly to check the possibility of prostate cancer in an individual. PSA can be increased in certain conditions beside cancer prostate such as prostate infection, retention of urine, post TURP etc.

Who should get the PSA test done?

All men (above age 50 years) should get the serum PSA done beginning at the age of 50 years and subsequently 1-2 yearly depending upon the PSA report. Men who have family history of prostate cancer or ovarian/breast/colon cancer should get this test done beginning at age of 45 years.

Whom to visit if PSA comes high?

You should visit your nearby urologist for further evaluation for raised PSA report.
